Bible Society began in 1804 as the British and Foreign Bible Society. Today our vision of making the Bible heard around the world continues. With the help of our supporters and churches and a network of over 140 national Bible Societies who work as a federation (The United Bible Societies) we share the challenge of fighting Bible poverty globally.
In England and Wales we also recognise the need to create a fresh awareness of the importance of the Bible, reduce the barriers in people's minds to it and create open access again. So we are advocates for the Bible in our society. We are focusing on the areas of Arts, Education, Media and Politics. We have run city wide media campaigns in Nottingham, Bristol and Greater Manchester. We are increasingly a research-based operation as we seek to influence the shapers in our culture. We are also working hard to increase the confidence of the churches in the Bible as well as providing the Bible in English in a growing number of translations as part of our service to the churches.
